Welcome to BirthMatters!

BirthMatters is a non-profit organization working to have the midwifery model of maternity care adopted in New Brunswick and funded under the provincial health care system.

This model is a woman centered approach to maternity care that involves informed choice, continuity of care, and choice of birthplace. Research shows that such an approach leads to less interventions and better overall outcomes for both mother and baby. Midwifery would especially benefit a province like New Brunswick that has some of the highest rates of intervention in Canada, some of the lowest rates of breastfeeding, and postpartum depression that continues to be an issue of great concern.

Some positive steps have taken place over the past few years, but much needs to happen before women in NB will have access to funded midwifery services. The Midwifery Act has been proclaimed in NB and the Midwifery Council of New Brunswick has formed and is meeting regularly. At this time, we need some new leaders to help grow the consumer movement for funded midwifery in NB. Can you play a role? Let’s keep up the pressure to ensure this happens sooner rather than later. Check out below and the In the News page to see how you can get involved. Babies won’t wait!

"In every country where I have seen real progress in maternity care, it was women's groups working together with midwives that made the difference."
